How did Your Actor MBA come to be? How did you choose your guests and topics for the episodes? How did you decide on the format of the show?
When we started to discuss the creation of Your Actor MBA, we knew we wanted to help actors and agreed that by doing it online, we would be able to help more people. Within a few weeks, it was clear that something much larger than a teleseminar or webinar would be the way Your Actor MBA would evolve. One day while brainstorming on the program, one of our crew members said, “I learn so much from just listening to you all tell stories about what has worked in your career.” Then it hit us. “Why not do that?” So, we created a dinner party style format where industry leaders sit together and discuss what they see working in the real world. The result? An honest, fun, lively discussion with industry leaders that can be found nowhere else.
The hosts met weekly and discussed ALL the things we’ve been reading online, teaching to our students and clients, and dying to dish about with our acting buddies. We wanted to pick topics that everyone could relate to and that we knew needed exploration and discussion. We’re all very dedicated to the acting community and wanted to bring you the real story from a deeper level of understanding. We’re very savvy in terms of what’s being offered on the web, and we wanted to bring you something that wasn’t just “talking heads” or a boring panel, but a meaningful and entertaining discussion about topics on everyone’s minds.
Once we narrowed down the topics for each episode, we went through our wish-lists of guests, looked at the highest-end folks with whom we actually had relationships, and who we absolutely had to get on the show, and went from there. We were fortunate in that pretty much everyone we asked wanted to be involved. Scratch that. Not just “wanted to be involved,” let’s say fully supported this venture of ours and felt compelled to come out and share some amazing experiences from their life in the industry.
What makes Your Actor MBA different from a live streaming event or teleseminar?
We are offering intimate discussions that you have never before been invited to experience. We handpicked guests that we knew would be able to share personal stories that will inform you about many different perspectives on the business as a whole. Through our frank, no-holds-barred conversations, you’ll learn straight from these pros how to shape a career filled with success in this industry and how you can incorporate these amazing bits of wisdom into your own life.
From our video episodes, accompanying notes, and online forums, you’ll get an up-to-the-moment insider’s view on how the business runs today. Your questions will be answered via our members-only message boards. This is much more than what you might pick up during a one-time event during which you’re given no access to the hosts and guests. Our generous, gracious, knowledgeable, and diverse guests have come together to help the often complicated journey of the working actor become much more simple and better understood.
I’m so excited about Your Actor MBA! But maybe it’s too advanced for my current level. How do I know if I am prepared for Your Actor MBA?
One of the coolest things about Your Actor MBA is that the information you’ll receive from experiencing our discussions is useful to actors at all levels. If you are preparing to move to Los Angeles or just moved here, Your Actor MBA can help give you a roadmap for your success.
If you have been in Los Angeles for a while and feel like you might be in a rut, our guests discuss how to get through that as well. You’ll come away from our vids invigorated and inspired. The best part of Your Actor MBA is that–because this is online–you can watch it at your leisure when you need a refresher or a pick-me-up.
Even if you have no intention of ever living and working in Los Angeles, you will benefit from the conversations about how to work with your representation, how to brand yourself, how to audition for film and television, how to identify your primary type, how to manage your money, and when–if ever–to be sure Hollywood is calling.
I’m a non-actor who works in the industry. Why should I enroll in Your Actor MBA?
Good question! We are providing “fly on the wall” storytelling that you can’t get unless you are literally present at every dinner party or cocktail party in town. Not even Nikki Finke can do that! We’ll bet that even YOU will learn something from our series of classes. And we’d love to have your participation in our members-only message boards! We value your perspective and look forward to including you in our course.
I’d like to enroll my kid actor. Is Your Actor MBA content appropriate for children?
While we absolutely cover topics that will be a part of an essential foundation for young actors who hope to have a long and thriving career in the industry, we do use foul language at times during the frank and open conversation in our episodes. It’s not like we are dropping “f-bombs” all the time, but we do sometimes swear, so if that’s potentially offensive to your young one, you may prefer to watch the videos together, after you’ve pre-screened and logged the “bleep” moments based on your own tastes.
We live out of town and our child is just starting out in the business. Will Your Actor MBA be valuable to us?
YES! As a parent, you need to educate yourself about the business so that you can protect your child. Bottom line: We want help you navigate the sometimes rocky path of this business. Although we are not going into specific details on issues directly related to the young actor, there are so many things that you will learn in terms of how the business works so that you can educate yourself and know the lay of the land before you make mistakes that could affect your child’s ability to compete in a tough industry.
I live outside of Los Angeles, is Your Actor MBA worth my time?
Of course! The business, networking, branding, money management, auditioning techniques, and mindset advice we cover in Your Actor MBA are essential tools for artists, no matter where they live!
What comes in the notes for each episode?
Each episode’s notes are jam-packed with a summary of all the great things we discuss with our guests. Just like academic syllabi, our episode notes will supply you with essential links, recommended reading, and other resources related to each episode’s key topics.
So, as you watch each episode, you can take notes but you don’t have to, because we will provide you a great outline to make sure you don’t miss anything.
I have a great guest or topic idea for a future episode. Can I submit that to you?
Absolutely! We’d love to hear about your great ideas and when we are ready, we will take them into consideration. Thank you!
